What is talc?
Talc is a hydrated magnesium silicate, Mg₃Si₄O₁₀(OH)₂, and the softest mineral on the Mohs scale (hardness 1). Its particles are thin, flat plates that slide over each other. This platy (lamellar) shape gives talc its value: it stiffens plastics, improves barrier properties in coatings and acts as a smooth, low-abrasion filler.
Why does the platy structure matter?
Flat plates align during processing and act like reinforcement inside a polymer or coating film. Compared with roughly round particles such as calcium carbonate, talc plates raise stiffness and heat resistance more per kilogram added. They also create a longer path for water and gases, which improves barrier and corrosion resistance in paints.
Where is industrial talc used?
| Industry | Use | What talc contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Plastics (PP compounds) | Automotive parts, appliances, housings | Higher stiffness, heat deflection temperature and dimensional stability |
| Plastics (PE film) | Anti-blocking | Prevents film layers sticking together |
| Plastics (PP) | Nucleating agent | Faster crystallisation and shorter cycle times |
| Paints and coatings | Primers, industrial and decorative paints | Barrier, sag resistance, matting and sanding ease |
| Ceramics | Wall and floor tiles, sanitaryware | Fluxing and lower firing shrinkage |
| Paper | Pitch and stickies control, filler | Absorbs resin deposits, improves smoothness |
| Rubber | Dusting and filler | Release and processing aid |
Which talc specifications matter?
Talc vs calcium carbonate: which should you use?
| Property | Talc | Calcium carbonate |
|---|---|---|
| Particle shape | Platy | Roughly spherical / blocky |
| Stiffness gain | High | Moderate |
| Heat deflection gain | High | Low to moderate |
| Impact strength | Tends to reduce | Better retained |
| Brightness | Good | Very high |
| Cost per tonne | Higher | Lower |
| Typical use | Engineering PP compounds, barrier coatings | Masterbatch, film, raffia, PVC, construction |
Is talc safe to handle?
Industrial talc is handled as a fine mineral dust. Standard dust control, ventilation and respiratory protection apply. Buyers should always request the SDS and an asbestos-free test report for the specific source.
